Cellphones for tweens is nothing new, but making it part of the back to school shopping list certainly is. Some of the phones marketed to kids are brightly colored and have less functionality than regular phones. They also allow mom and dad to have control over when and who their little tech mavens are calling.

Okay, it’s off to first grade. Got the pencil case, lunch box, and…cell phone? Yes, with companies marketing calling plans to “tweens,” ages 8 to 12, it was only a matter of time before cell phones found a place on their younger brothers’ and sisters’ back-to-school lists.
