busily painting the town orange in order to satisfy consumers who are
already in the mood. But somehow, it always feels like holidays come earlier every year. Are consumers really driving the demand to bring all things holiday to the forefront sooner?

ON Madison Avenue, it’s beginning to look a lot like Halloween.

Weeks before Oct. 31, marketers, retailers and media companies are busily painting the town orange. They are festooning advertisements, stores, magazine covers and Web sites with panoplies of pumpkins, skeins of skeletons and gaggles of ghosts.

The nation’s leading discount chains were hauling out the Halloween decorations and merchandise around Labor Day. Since then, magazines with Halloween cover articles — and ads — have started to arrive.
